I'm still confused, ...can I backup and restore text messages or not?

Some say yes some say no but when you go into iCloud settings there's no option for Messages.

Both iCloud & iTunes backups automatically include messages.

what you see in icloud settings is not the same as what is saved to an icloud backup. HT4859 shows you more than you need to know about backups...
