Q: Expanding RAM - is 2x8GB compatible with 2011 iMac?
I have a 2011 27" iMac and was hoping to upgrade the RAM. I've looked online and apparently the max RAM is 16gb for this model. Has anyone tried installing 2x8gb chips as opposed to 4x4gb? If so, does it work? This is my first attempt at updating RAM and unfortunately I bought the RAM solely based on the 16gb max and didn't see the apple recommendation to use 4x4gb chips until after I already purchased the 2x8. Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure you can only use max 16Gb ?
I see that Apple recomends only 16 GB, but if you download and run a Crucial Test from here http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=66DBF06C31D926C3 you will see it can go to 32GB (this at least is the result on my mid 2011 iMac.
Now, since you already have 2x8GB I would try to install thenm toghether with the existing 2x4 and see if they work.
