Have you failed to keep the apps on your computer?
i expected itunes to have saved them for me
itunes makes a backup every time i charge it up
Synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes pourchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

However, many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier. You can only download the current version from the App store.
Your only way for many apps is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
That is not the problem, the app have been updated and old versions are not being retained that are compatible with my device.
I do not care if my device is slow, it should be able to run iOS 6.1 less some functionality due to the lack of a camera etc.
where are my apps?
