Tap Settings > General > Software Update
If an update is available there will be an active Update button. If you are current,
then you will see a gray screen with a message saying your are up to date.

Feb 26, 2013 3:45 PM in response to Yavianie72612by stevejobsfan0123,No. The act of updating iTunes does not update the iPod. iTunes 10.7 is needed to be compatible with iOS 6 (the latest OS) devices. After the iTunes update (if you don't already have that or a higher version), then you can connect the iPod to iTunes and check for updates. iTunes will download the update and install it to your iPod. Make sure it is plugged in throughout the whole iOS update process.
What version of iOS do you currently have on the iPod? Settings > General > About > Version. If it is iOS 5.0 or later, iTunes is not needed and you can go to Settings > General > Software Update. If it is older than iOS 5, you will not see this menu and need to update in iTunes.
