why after hours the computer gets to process and freeze

While working after hours my computer starts to show the color wheel as is processing and then freezes, have to shut it down from the energy plug and when restarting the typical sound of initiating the computer doesn't hear. Sometimes instead of having the apple sign it just shows a the ban circle (a circle with a line across as prohibited something). Does anyone have any clue?
