disk i/o spiking suddenly

hi

i've been working on logic express fine for a few months and now suddenly while working a new song the disk i/o is maxing out ridiculously and i'm getting disk too slow error and not being able to play or record or anything. i've hardly got any trax or plugins running, and the intensive stuff is frozen. any ideas?

i've just added a 250gb external hard drive (usb) where all the audio files are being stored, but it's been running ok for the past two weeks with this set-up, and now it's just seemingly gone weird. i've run maintenance scripts and defragged the disk etc, but no avail. any help appreciated.

god sorry for all these additions, i'm a useless forum poster. ok so i froze every track and i'm still getting the error, so something is wrong that minimizing the cpu load isnt fixing. i've played around the buffer size and all the other stuff that's bene posted on this forum but to no avail. anyone know what i can do? this is a new problem that's come out of the blue, usually my g4 can handle some serious workload.
