Have checked settings on the iPhone and Mac and can find nothing to change. The problem existed with my iPad Touch, so I guess that the problem is with a setting on the Mac. Any recommendations?
Are you syncing your calendar with your Mac using iCloud or iTunes?
Do you have the Calendar option checked under iCloud on your Mac? Also under the iCloud option on your phone?
Syncing with iTunes. Do not use iCloud at all.
Try resetting the SyncServices folder on your Mac as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627, then try syncing again.

To Apple: for non-techy people, it would be helpful if your OS names were consistent. My apple info gives me an OS number, not a beast name. How hard would it be to include the beast name in info?
