My "menu bar" moves to the right

My menu bar slowly drifts to away from the top left corner of my screen.

I never see it happen but I just look up and it's moved.

I am on 10.8.2 and when I open the notification centre, which shifts all my windows back to the left, the menu bar resets with it and it fixes it for a while.
I've been doing using this as a fix for several months. but is there anyone else with this issue who has found a perminate fix?

I've noticed it on both my iMac and Macbook Pro, running 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 respectively.

Here is a selective screen grab from 10.8.2.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Does this happen in other user accounts as well (try creating one and logging in to it to test)? If not then try opening the Finder, holding the Option key and selecting Library from the Go menu. Then go to the Preferences folder and remove the file called "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist" and then log out and log back into your account. Hopefully this will clear the issue.

Sorry I haven't replied, I've been travelling.

I had a guest account enabled already, I logged in, and used it for a day. Didn't have any issues.

I disabled all third party applications from startup, and then logged back into my account, and within an hour or two I had the issue while working on a paper with texmaker. At the time I only had iTunes, Safari, Preview, Chrome, TexMaker & Dictionary open.

As you can see I noticed it earlier than the first screenshot. It will move to the right, not at a steady constant pace, nor is it's movement noticable. I haven't stared at it for longer than a minute or two, but I don't notice it move, and then I look up a few minutes later and it's moved.

I then created a new account, not a guest account, and I used the exact same applications for a few hours while writing. It didn't move.

I'm going to try removing com.apple.systemuiserver.plist as @Topher_Kessler suggested.

It that doesn't work, I'll try safe mod.

I would have tried the safemode suggestion too but It's my birthday and I need to get a research paper finished so I can go enjoy the sun & beach!

Thanks,

Alex

I went into Safe Mode. Thanks @Linc_Davis, you're post on this thread helped me:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4661439

My research require Ubuntu, I work with robots and it's the only operating system that is really supported. So I have rEFIt installed, and I dual boot. I needed to sudo nvram boot-args="-x" to get into safemode.

In safemode I didn't experience it. So I think that has narrowed it down to a third party software or app isntalled.

I started going back through software that was only running on my account. I use "DashSaver" (http://highearthorbit.com/software/dashsaver/) as a screensaver.

I hadn't noticed if the menu bar only moved after my screen saver was on or not. I've uninstalled it and will see if the issue goes away.

VM is not an option, I've tried them all. Unfortunatly I have a very specific list of requirements to plug into and work with very specific hardware. I don't even get a choice of Linux Distro, Ubuntu is the only officially supported although mint & arch can be hacked into working.

Thanks link to rEFInd.

I have been using rEFIt for a while and when I swapped my hhd for ssd last summer I didn't bother looking for an alternative project.I had noticed it hadn't been updated in a while, but to me that wasn't a abd thing: if it ain't broken don't fix it. rEFIt hasn't given me any problems in ML.

I don't plan on switching to rEFInd right now because I'm not having any issues, but I'll keep rEFInd bookmarked, I'm in the market for a new desktop. The fork will turn one year old in the coming weeks, and wouldn't have been an option as I look through their git commit history, last summer it was still buggy.

I came from Linux to Mac and if it weren't for a few key pieces of software I'd likely go back, but the dual boot has been working great for over 3 years now. The biggest plus with OSX, and Apple hardware is they have great support. If you want to do something that Apple allows you to do, it will just work, no hacking and tweaking to get it running smoothly. If you want to do something that Apple doesn't support, they're is usually a way but it might not be fun. If I'm developing all day in a linux environment with robots it's nice to be able to go home and boot into a fully supported OS, and open up Aperture or any other software and know it's gonna just work.

Since removing DashSaver, I haven't had any problems.

Thanks for all your help.

I'm going to close the issue and say it was a result of the 3rd party screen-saver app that I had installed.

Cheers

The issue has returned.

It hasn't been happening since my last post. Today I started a Masters program and needed to install Eclipse & Google Drive for some of my courses. I have used Eclipse in the past and was just configuring it when I looked up... The menu bar had nearly moved all the way across. it was near my wireless icon. I messed up the keyboard shortcut to screenshot and cleared my screen, which fixed the menu bar.

I'll see if it happens again and post a screenshot.

My "menu bar" moves to the right
