QuickTime supports many different file types & codecs, but not all. In many cases you can lookup, download & install specific codecs if you need them.

QuickTime: About Playing AVI Files

QuickTime X: Playback of MPEG2 video

QuickTime 7.6.6 (you may need this if QT X won't play old videos)

QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component (for QT 7.x)

Windows Media Components for QuickTime

Flip4Mac Player/Pro/Studio/StudioProHD
