Feb 28, 2013 12:26 PM in response to Eric Rootby richard_2013,Thanks for the reply. I had found those links .... but what makes me nervous is that the list of supported models (at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#samsung )
does NOT include the model which I am using: Samsung ML-1710
The second site only appears to Windows drivers.

Feb 28, 2013 12:34 PM in response to Linc Davisby richard_2013,The link says:
- Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure OS X has the latest information about printer software it can download from Apple. OS X updates its list of available printer software. It downloads printer software as needed when you add printers.
When I go to Apple menu > Software Update and enter a search for 'printers', all that I get is a list of various apps with 'printers' in the name. How do I find if a driver for a Samsung ML-1710 is available?

Feb 28, 2013 1:49 PM in response to richard_2013by Linc Davis,You could try this:
or this:
macosx/samsung-gdi | The Linux Foundation
I have no idea whether either one works. Make sure you know how to uninstall this software before you install it.
I'd rather get a new printer myself.

Feb 28, 2013 6:10 PM in response to Eric Rootby richard_2013,I downloaded from the 'Samsung Print Drivers' site .... but still get the 'Filter' failed message in the Print queue.
Meanwhile, Samsung have replied washing their hands of support:
"Unfortunately, we do not entirely support Max OS X, and do not keep updated drivers for Apple products. It does sound like the driver may need to be updated, but you will want to contact Apple for further assistance."
I would like to say 'unbelievable' but that is the reply I get from 'Samsung Customer Support Center'.
If the responsibility does belong to Apple, how does one get their attention?

It is not Apple's responsibility. It is up to all printer vendors to either make new printer drivers for the latest version of OS X or ensure the current drivers they have for the previous OS work on the new OS.
So it is up to Samsung to manufacture a driver for your ML1710. Not Apple. The drivers that are available from Apple are made by Samsung and supplied to Apple so that they can be downloaded via Software Update.

May 8, 2013 7:47 AM in response to Linc Davisby TXcrude,After my 2008 Mac mini (10.6.8) died, I got a new i7 Mac mini with OS X 10.8.3 pre-installed. Was able to transfer my settings, documents and apps from Time Machine backup.
The only things that did not work anymore due to PowerPC code no longer being support in 10.8.x were:
Eudora
MS Office 2004
Samsung ML-1710 printer driver
Here are my solutions:
Eudora -> Eudora OSE (Open Source Edition) based on Mozilla (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_OSE)
MS Office 2004 -> MS Office 2011 (thanks to my employers MS Home Use Program HUP)
Samsung ML-1710 printer driver - SpliX driver (http://guigo.us/mac/splix/)
