I have an extensive selection of photos that I need to place into a Word document. I have been selecting each photo from iPhoto, cropping, copying and then placing it into the Word document. This is very time consuming when you need to handle 50+ photos with small caption underneath it. Is there any way to copy the photos I need in a group and drop them into the document, resize as needed, and add the caption?

Try creating a contact sheet in iPhoto with just the caption/description underneath which is added in iPhoto. You can determine the number of columns per page to get the size you want
and then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto.
If you don't have the Save PDF to iPhoto in the menu you can download the files from Toad's Cellar. There are two versions, one at 200 DPI and one for 300 DPI (used for iPhoto books). Place the files in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot..
That creates a jpg of the contact sheet page and imports it into iPhoto from where you can drag it into the Word page as Keith described..

Sure, Word will handle re-sizing and cropping, though every edition of Word I have used can get cranky about this at times.
If you are dragging and dropping, simply select all the photos and drag them over.
Or you can select the images and use file->export and save them to a folder where you can use the insert->imagefile command. THis gives you more control over the images as you export them.
Note: I have no idea how word will react if try to insert multiple images at a time. You may have to spend a lot of time re-organizing them and moving them around.

The first one is 1 Photo Per Page (1ppp), the second one is 2 photos per page (2ppp).
I use them for photos I take at events.
I also have one for Powerpoint.
