Capturing iTunes Movies Screenshots

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum.

Before submitting my question, I searched this community and other web venue of course. It was to no avail. None of the products (Skitch, SnagIt, Snap Pro X, etc.) could do it.

There is a image in a scene from the 2009 Star Trek I purchased in Full HD from the iTunes store (not cheap either!). I wanted to capture this rather beautiful moment between Spock and his mother, and use it as a background on my MacBook Pro. This is what I got:

Does anyone have a workaround or a product that is certain to do the job?

On a side note, I remember a time when it was a snap (pardon the pun) to capture any image, including from HD movies on computers. But now I feel that with all that protect our content at all cost from Companies out there, we are moving backwards. I know pirating is an issue, but that's not the problem of those of us who do not engage in this sort of activity.

We should be allowed to do whatever we want with OUR purchased content in our own living rooms, especially at the premium we pay!

Moving backwards like this is akin of giving a 2 years old a chemistry set and a microscope as toys to play with and when he grows up and ready to go to school, replace those great toys with a rattle and a pacifier!

Excuse the rant but at the price those movies cost, we should be allowed to play too 🙂. Feel free to comment on this if you wish.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and/or solutions

Best Regards

How are you taking the screenshot?

Shift command 3 seems to work in iTunes for me.

For movies and some others I have notices this alpha screen as well, but not that often.

I just tested this on my MBP and achieved the same result. It seems that this is part of the intellectual property protection program. I know of no legal way that you may use to copy a frame.

Ciao.

I used a DVD, not iTunes. I also used SHIFT COMMAND 3

Hi leroydouglas,

Shift+Command+3 is exactly what I used and what gave the result in my first post. That keyboard shortcut seems to work on just about anything but doesn't work - at least on my computer - for grabbing protected content like movies purchased from iTunes.

Hi OGELTHORPE,

While you made a good point about the Intellectual Property Program, all the honnest folks seem to get punished for the few who choose to engage in piracy.

I'll grant you this: It will be a long while (perhaps forever) before we are offered a legal way to grab a few frames here and there 😉.

EDIT (added)

You know, when screen grabbing became more and more difficult, I tried a couple of illegal software. It was for my own personal use. Somehow, I felt dirty every time I use those solutions. Nobody who's on the up and up should ever feel this way!

In spirit I am 100% in your camp on this issue. When I purchase a music CD, I load it into iTunes and that is about the last time that CD gets used. Then that iTunes library get loaded on an iPod and also get backed up on Time Machine and a separate external HDD. Thus from the one CD there I have a minimum of 4 copies for my personal use.

This is not the case with DVDs. If your DVD fails then you have to purchase a replacement which fills the coffers of the Hollywood titans even more. They have the political clout and have purchased our lawmakers and we have to live with that unless we use our power at the polls. Now I do understand the position of Hollywood and they must be able to earn an income from their efforts, other wise there will be no DVDs at all (to copy legally or otherwise). I just don't think that the proper balance has been achieved.

Ciao.
