how to open a "preview" file on adobe?

What is the file type, if it is a PDF then Preview or Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat can open it, so what is the file type.

It is a PDF, everytime I try to open the file it goes to preview not PDF. I need to stay on PDF

PDF is a file type, not an application. I presume you mean either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Click on a PDF, Get Info (Command-I or under the File menu), go to the Open With.. section, select Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat as appropriate to open the files, and click the Change All button.
