subtitles won't show

I have a macbook pro

and I recently downloaded a torrent file and I converted it through utorrent and it said that the video had subtitles.

When I converted it to .mov and watched it, I only saw the credit to the person who subbed the video but not the subtitles.

I tried to go to View->Subtitles, but it showed a gray "Off" with a check next to it (meaning I couldn't click it)

What should I do?

I also downloaded the Perian... I don't know how to use it exactly,, will that help?

I tried to play it on iTunes, too and add subs, but that didn't work either. Yes, I went to the files tab or something and made subtitles to "English" but it didnt work at all.
