Bluetooth "Not Available"

Icon in menu bar says "Bluetooth not available" and there is no longer a Blutooth icon in Syatem preferences. It was working fine, I launched iTunes by clicking on Dock icon. It appeared to launch as I got the screen but was not responding. I tried Force Quit from dock icon but it would not. I tried force quit from Apple menu but it still would not quit and the hard drive sounded as though it was thrashing. Then got spinning beachball. Tried to shut down from Apple menu but it would not. Finally held ppower button until it shut down. On restart the the Blutooth was not available. Subsequent restarts still not available.

This is a MacBook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. ( This version of OS X is beginning to make me feel I'm back in Windows ****)

After further research here I found a suggestion to reset the SMC. I tried it and it worked - problem solved.
