why do I hear but not see all midi notes in piano roll?

Yes it is true that I am new to both MIDI and piano roll in logic. I have been using logic for some time though, and I do understand the midi concepts (note, pitch, velocity, release,127,etc) but this one is a problem with basic piano roll functions and MIDI. I was watching a beginners tutorial and following along. He selected a kit and began finding sounds via his midi keyboard (i was using the internal caps lock one). Everything is going great, I finish recording my kick and snare and even fix them to where I want post-recording. The problem comes when I pres record again and add hi-hat (for example but any sound would do). I don't see the previous kick and snare anywhere, yet I hear it. I save close and reopen and I only see the hi-hat but hear it all.

Any suggestions?

You have two regions on top of eachother; with MIDI it means they both play. If you hold the Alt key while selecting the Track (header), Logic will select both regions (in fact, it'll select all regions on that track) and display all notes in the piano roll. You can then also use the Merge regions command to make those regions into one region. My keycommand for that is the = key, but I'm not sure if that is the default.

Thanks for your help Erik. I found the answer you posted about 30 minutes after posting my question. To me it doesn't answer my question 100%. The reason is that I can't expect to believe that every time someone records midi they have to go through all these extra steps to merge it (and it is not easy to do because they are hidden behind one another) in fact my problem was so unique that other logic users didn't understand why I am having this trouble. SO that brings me to my conclusion, that I have some setting that is keeping this from being a seamless operation and transforming it into a bunch of hoop jumps. Thoughts? Could it have to do with record settings of "merge"? I saw a few different settings there but none make sense to me.

File > Project Settings > Recording probably has the options that you're looking for - Erik's given you a bit of an explanation.
