Hi,
You say FaceTime and iChat which suggests Lion (OS X 10.7.x) as you operating system.
That means that your Apple ID can be used in FaceTime on both the iOS device and the FaceTime app on the Mac.
In iChat the Apple ID will only be a Valid AIM Name but the password does need to be 16 characters or Less to work with the AIM servers.
I would start by adding a Public DNS Server IP address to the System Preference > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab
Google run 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which seem to be able to 'find" the two Apple Server involved if your ISPs DNs servers can't.
I would then check System Preferences > Security > Firewall and make sure it is allowing iChat and FaceTime.

I tried what you suggested. Im running OS X 10.8.2. WHen trying to login to face time a message in red says "the server encountered an error processing registration. PLease try again later."
Hi,
So in fact You are running Mountain Lion and Messages at version 7.0.1
In that case open th Apple Menu top left then About this Mac
In the About this Mac pane click the line that tell you the Current OS X version twice.
This will change to the Build Number then the Serial Number
Is the Serial Number present ?
IF not visit a Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider and get it replaced.

HI,
I take it this Apple ID has had the email Verified in the Apple ID page if it is external to Apple ?
At one stage you create an Apple ID with something that looked like an email.
More recently with some services Apple have asked people to verify their emails (particularly useful for password recovery).

I am having the same problem on my iPad. I actually used Facetime twice on my iPad and then it stopped working. I get the same can not connect message and I have verified that I am connected to the network. There is no further message that says why.
Hi,
FaceTime actually uses more internet ports than iMessages does.
When it did work were you at the same place that does not work ?
Have you made any changes to your routing arrangements or devices ?
