I wanted to know if there is a way in iTunes to update the existing apps on my iPhone 4S?
Is wi-fi or Cellular data connection the only way it can be installed?

As long as your device is set up to sync with iTunes you can update the apps in iTunes and then sync to the device. If you select the Apps section of your iTunes libray you will see a button at the bottom-right to Check for Updates. Click that, update, and sync.
