Will an iPhone 4S work properly without a battery but connected to the 30pin?

So, my lock button jammed, I figured, no problem, I've fixed my iPhone screens dozens of times, surely I could take it apart and solve this lock button problem, welp first things first is to remove the battery, well that's where things went down hill, my battery release tap(the plastic to loosen the battery from the phone) ripped, leaving me with no other way but to pry the battery out so I grab the same screw driver I used to unscrew it and *tear*, literally a little spark of fire came out of the battery, I would then leave the phone a lone for a few mins then go back to remove the battery... My problem now is, my iPhone 4S will not connect to any thing, wifi, cellular, nothing but oviously it still works, I wanted you guys to help me figure out if this is simply because I need a battery in the iPhone and not simply running off the 30 pin cable or could it be something different?

I was in the same situation as you, i opened up my iphone4S to do some repairs, then i accidentally pierced the battery with tweezers while the tweezers touched the metal bezel, the battery was still connected to the mainboard. So it created some sparks and caught fire, i immediately pulled out the battery which caused the battery ribbon to tear. After that i switched on the phone back with only the charger, without battery in it, the phone booted but the cellular, bluetooth, wifi, sound, vibrator was not working and the options were greyed out, after few mins the phone restarted. But if i connected the phone to a computer USB the apple logo just kept flashing repeatdly, i believe the power is not sufficient as there's no battery connected. So after purchasing a new battery and installed it, the phone was back to normal, everthing worked as normal how it was previously...

So i can conclude that switching on the phone without battery will disable functions mentioned above and restart, as told by deggie above, battery is a part of the circuit and battery needs to be installed to run the phone as normal.

I don't think u might have fried up anythin and ur battery was not connected..
