Configurator and iCloud

We want to be able to track our devices using only configurator. Currently this is the process we are doing.

  1. Prepare one device
  2. Adding the iCloud account on that device by entering the account and password on the actual device
  3. Making a backup of that device with a generic iCloud account for that cart of iPads
  4. Adding that back up to all devices

Now all devices have iCloud on them and are trackable with find my iPad. We want to lock that account on so that students can not erase it.

Touching every device

  1. Settings
  2. General
  3. Restrictions
  4. Enable Restrictions
  5. Accounts
  6. Don't Allow Changes

This seems like a lot of steps and I am wondering if there is a better way to do this.

seems a bit of a pain. from previous experience I have to say following apples guidelines is best, in the long term. you are otherwise setting yourself up for a big problem later on. (we had a similar issue here when we tried to do " builds" for iphones all using same itunes account. worked fine, then apple brought iCloud and we ended up having to recall *all* of them later on.)

everyone using same icloud account opens up a potential for sharing of personal/confidential data which you have to evaluate. or at best stops everyone from using icloud. which honestly is very handy to replace lost, broken or stolen devices.

if you have lots of ipads, you should have an MDM and most can do location tracking or even wipes on demand .

also bear in mind there are licensing issues , you cannot purchase one app once then install it on 100 devices and still be compliant. => you still need lots of itunes accounts to use in the store.
