Speakers on my Macbook are very quiet!

I don't know if this is a problem with just my new macbook, but the speakers on this thing are awfully quiet. I've maxed the volume thru iTunes, System Preferences, and the volume buttons on the keyboard and its seriously hard to hear anything going on. If I put my ear up to the speaker itself, I can only hear the little click noise when i change the volume after the on screen graphic shows it half way to max.

When external speakers are plugged in, the noise made is comparable to my old Powerbook 12", so I'm thinking my speakers or the connection to them is messed up.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I've just looked at this forum as I've got the same problem on my 10 day old MacBook. I had already tried all the suggestions with iTunes etc, but with the volume 3 squares up from mute, it is inaudible. There's got to be something wrong as this is the first Mac out of 4 I've had that was this quiet. Waiting for someone to come up with the answer - I hope!

it's not problem. all macbooks are the same. yeah, it's much less than audible. before moving to intel mac, I used volume logic which dramatically improves sound quality so that you can hear totally different. unfortunately, there is not universal binary coming out yet. so I just sent them(plantronics) email about the date of release or when. I didn't get answer yet. but I quarantee it is definitely the best solution ever.

I am gonna wait anyway.

At first, I was happy with the audio on my Black MacBook. I installed Boot Camp and was still happy with the audio in Mac OS X and Windows XP. Then, one day when playing audio in iTunes I heard a pop and the audio seemed suddenly lower.

Since that time, my MacBook won't chime on restart and audio is quiet in all applications (Mac OS X and Windows XP.) If I set my volume at 50 percent or lower, you can't even hear my alert sound.

I tried PRAM zaps and PMU resets. Then, I took my MacBook to a Genius at an Apple Store. They ran a hardware test with no bad results, and even booted off an external FireWire drive and had the same audio issue. They say I have to send my MacBook in for repair. Ugh.

I need the MacBook for the next two weeks, so I will have to wait until then to back it up and send it in. if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this myself, please let me know.

Hi Mc Canical and everyone else.
Mc Canical is see you are from Philly ( South for me). I went to the Apple store in Marlton NJ last night and tested all the Mac Books on display and they all had a low volume like mine and I yours. This may be because the speakers are facing in the rear and not on top like the iBooks.
I am now running 10.4.7 and this update did not make any changes to the volume.
This made me feel a little better.

Hope this info helps.

I'll chime in too. The volume on my MacBook is intolerably low. Trying to watch a DVD on this thing with any kind of ambient noise and you can't hardly hear it.

When adjusting the volume, I can only hear the blip sounds when I'm at 50% or more. Of course I can't see myself ever turning the volume down below 100% since it's still too quiet!

I have been told by a Genius at my local Apple Store that they will send my computer in for repair. I just can't part with it for a week or two, so it will be awhile before I send it in.

My MacBook has now also occassioally started displaying a bunch of horizontal lines ina rainbow of colors on start or restart. Zapping PRAM fixes the problem temporarily, but it keeps coming back.

I would love it if Apple would release a Firmware Restore CD image like they have for other Intrl models. I really wonder if restoring my firmware would resolve these issues. I have them even when booting from an external drive, so the problems must be firmware or hardware related. Ugh.

There needs to be a fix to this soon. I'm a 'mac evangelist' probably like the rest of you and I've talked 2 friends into 'switching' with the Macbook. I checked out both of their new computers and the sound is unacceptable. While in their house (not alot of background noise) they can't even video ichat with me without wearing headphones.

I certainly hope apple comes out with a fix for this problem soon.
