Is a .img file essentially the same as a .iso file ?

I have made an IMG file from DVD Studio Pro. Its on my desktop now.

I am giving this to a PC user. If he wants to treat it as a ISO file, can he just change the extenstion to .ISO and it will function exactly the same as an ISO ?

A .img file is a virtual Mac hard drive. PCs can't use them.
