I have a current Mac Mini (6,2) with 16gb RAM that I tried to wipe clean in preparation to sell. I am now aware that I could have done this through the recovery partition that is now part of the current OS, but didn't know that an hour ago. I booted in Target disk mode from my MBP, formatted the hd on the MacMini, and installed ML on the Mini from my MBP. When I restarted the MacMini after OS installation, I only see the white startup screen with a circle and line through it. I can restart without a problem from my MBP, but the MacMini won't start up on its own.

Reformat the mini then startup and it will go into Internet Recovery Mode.

Thanks for the suggestion, macjack, but still no-go. I reformatted the mini, disconnected from the MBP, then restarted the mini. Got the white screen with circle/line for a minute or so until it timed out and shut down.

Also, I tried option during startup. I get the 10.8.2 Recovery drive to show up, but when selected it just goes straight to the white screen and circle with a line through it.

You might try downloading Mountain Lion with the same Apple ID as on your Mini and then using that to install ML.

Not sure why no internet recovery after a re-format though...

Don't understand why my Apple ID would make a difference. The Mini's HD has been formatted. I tried creating a recovery disk (USB) as well. The machine just won't take any of the options I select when using the option key during startup.

Long shot, but since nothing else is working.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the grey Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

Internet Recovey is dependent on your Apple ID.

You installed a special build of OS X that only works on the MBP, not on the mini. Boot the mini from its own Recovery partition and install again.
