I have a back up but i have a password for it. Any ideas what it could be as I never backed up to iCloud and the iTunes account password does is not recognised as the one used ? Please help

Nope no one can help you. If you password protected your backup then only you would know it. That is the purpose of having a password so no one else can spy on your backup. The only thing you can do is restore the phone as new and go from there.

If it has a password then you most certainly did put a password in when you backed it up. It does not randomly put a password on your backup.
It came up create back up before restore two boxes yes and no then started with the restore.

if the backup has a password, try the password for your banking application. banking apps are pretty notorious for autoencrypting backups.
