Excel graphs in powerpoint into imovie

What is the best way to put excel graphs into imovie? I need to put 2 graphs together on one sheet, so I have aranged them in powerpoint, and saved the powerpoint as a JPEG, and as a powerpoint movie but when I import these into imovie, the quality is really bad, and the text is blury when its desplayed on a larger screen. Any ideas, on how to put a powerpoint into an imovie? Thanks!

hello rainbowsister,

i have made the best experiences concerning image files with TIFF files, they have the best quality.
for DV-PAL images must be 720x576 px, for DV-NTSC it's 720x480 but to get better quality you could double these values. please note that image files must be saved with screen resolution: 72 dpi. higher resolution will not give you better results.
if you look at the figures you will see that a TV doesn't have the resolution of a computer screen so you might want to consider showing the graphs separately in order to get - more or less - the desired result.

hope it helps & viva la mela

Gracias Mishmumken,

I tried saving the powerpoint (with the 2 graphs from excel) into the highest resolution TIFF format, and it looks great on the computer screen as the TIFF, but when I put it into the imovie, the graphs still come up in poor resolution and blury. This still happens even when I make the imovie project with the grapsh, into a quicktime. Any other Ideas? I'm trying to put together a movie of my Masters reserch project filming underwater footage of fish and cleaner shrimp, and I need to display my statistics too. Perhaps a powerpoint presentation will have to do.

hello rainbowsister,

do NOT use the highest possible resolution, this makes things worse.
screen resolution is 72 dpi, as opposed to 300 dpi print resolution for example.
what are your settings regarding image size?

it just came to my mind that powerpoint could possibly be able to output movie files .... i'm not sure here, because i quit using it when i switched to mac 🙂

let me know your settings and we'll try to figure something out ...
but don't get your hopes up to high - as i said, video looks different

keep us posted & viva la mela

Hi thanks for all your help,

Yes tried both of those options, the 72 dpi automatically sets the immage size at 720x540 px, and its still blury when played in imovie. When saving the powerpoint as a movie it won't accept it into imovie "cant parse it" it says.

Maybe I need to save the excel graphs in a diffrent format, other than power point, but its so weird because the graphs look great in power point.

Also I am using PAL format, becuase I'm in Australia.

iMovies goal is "projection" on TV - in PAL countries that has a screen resolution of 768x576 (.. and that is max, in real life it is less...)

second, a computer has no interlacing - that is a good trick for moving images on TV, but that "blurrs" any detailed content...

sooo....
you charts will be minimized & blurred. in case you used any serif-typo, the tiny lines will vanish/flirr.. that isn't iM fault, but due to TV standards....

I would:
use Excel to export directly into some pict format (tiff isn't bad, because no compression); I don't see any need to make an inbetween step in some slideshow app ... (???)
and I would "tune" in Excel the formats: not too much content, san-serif typo, no bright colors (as pure red), no 1pix lines etc....
best practise:
re-create new, "video compatible" charts in some pic maker (e.g. Photoshop) by using the correct settings from the beginning - you instantly see what you get...

don't forget: judge pic quality of iM projects only TV screen!
______
besides:
dpi is an internal-file-info just need for PRINTS... a 10x10pix picture is displayed as 10x10 pix on every computer's screen... independed of 72dpi, 120dpi, or 2400dpi... bigger dpi's make file size larger, but not better for monitor use.... 😉

Hi Karsten,

Thanks your ideas are very helpful, now I just have to learn how to use Photoshop!:)Power point is really easy to use and manipulate sizes of inserted pictures, but I bet creating a TIFF of the graphs directly in Photoshop will be better. I'll see if I can find the user guides for photoshop, give it a try. So I'll maniulate my graphs first in Excel, get it aranged somehow in Photoshop, put the TIFF in imovie, play it on a TV and see how it all goes. Peace, Rainbowsis

... thanks for using the forum's marker feature... 🙂

if you can handle PowerPoint as a "layout app", you will handle Photoshop too.. I'm using PS-Elements for some years, still surprised about some options & possibilities... anyhow... In PSE's new doc prefs you are allowed to choose "PAL" with all correct settings... and don't forget the all-mighty drag'n drop options on a Mac... if it is a "picture" in one app, you can drag it to another one... (let Excel calculate the chart/drag to PSE/add colors, titles, etc/drag into iM)

I'm used to use one app for its native task, coming from the stoneage of computer history, we had no "all purposes" office apps - and .ppt is a slideshow maker, not a layouter or painter... you will get used to it too.. 😉

another, silly hint: I do use a dvd-r w media, to do such "test burns"... just a quick'n dirty version of some critical part of a project (sometimes just a few secs), burn it, watch it, trash it 😉

Hey Karsten,

great ideas! I think my question is very close to answered, but the more one learns, the more questions one seems to have. Ok, now my computer says I need to re-instal photoshop, becuses I'm now using OS X instead of OS 9, but my disks that came with my laptop are sent away in a box, on a ship to the US! (Returning from Grad School soon) Can you think of anywhere I can "get the Mac OS X tune-up" or "run the photoshop reinstaller in OS X reinstall".

Funny thing is I took a course in Photoshop, and since I never use it I forgot evrything! Any ideas on where to find user manuals on line?

Thanks for all you help, this is just amazing, getting help from folks in Germany and Belieze!

... ehm, well, .. you need the installer disk to install an app... and there's no free PS Os9>>X upgrade...

for a quick'n dirty solution:
you Mac came preinstalled with "Graphic Converter", mainly meant for ... ehm, graphic conversion... but with some basic "paint" abilities...

or, you use Appleworks (should be preinstalled too) for painting...

yepp, that is one of the advantages of the iNet - no borders, one community... I like that! 🙂
... aside the fact with the common lingo.. but establishing iChat for "talk", we can add "talkin' with hands+feeds" too... 😉

Could Rainbowsister take a screen shot of the graphs ?
And then put it into iMovie?

Take a screen shot of the graphs that are in powerpiont.
Line up the graphs the way you want them to look –
and take a screen shot of them. Use the red box in Grab.
There is an application called “Grab”
it's in your Utilities folder that’s in your Applications folder,
Just pull it into your Dock.
Use the - Capture – Selection- in your Menu – then save as.
Just drag in from your desk top
It work for me in the past in iMovie.

I also use photoshop elements too.
