Unable to download and install iOS 6.1.2 update on iPhone 3GS

I received a software update notice to download and install iOS 6.1.2 update. I went to download update in General in Settings under Software Update. I then selected the button labeled "Download and Install." I agree to the license for the software, which then started to download. The download bar showed about 80% complete, would then stall until I received a message "Software Update Failed, An error occurred downloading iOS 6.1.2". What would caused a failure on an iPhone 3GS with iOS 6.1 installed already?

The best advice we have for you is to do your update with iTunes after doing a full backup first. This is the safest method of doing iOS updates and is least prone to issues.


If you have your heart set on doing the update on your phone, first make sure you have wifi and your phone is fully charged. If you were unable to download the full update perhaps you lost internet connectivity.


Do a full restart by holding down Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds then allow the phone to restart and try again.
