I was going to give a friend of mine, my original iPad (Version 1), but when I plug it into the charger, it does not appear to take a charge at all. I'm sure it worked several months ago. Could not using it for 6-10 months make the battery no longer chargable ?

Using the Supplied iPad Charger and Cable... Plug it into the Mains Power and Charge for at least One Hour.
Then...
Perform a Reset...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

ERASE / Clear All Data

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings

I had the exact same problem as you. I hadn't used to my ipad 1 for over 6 months and it wouldn't turn on and didn't seem to be charging. There was no battery icon on the screen after I plugged it in.
After reading this post today I just left it plugged in for 2 hours or more and it has only just showed up the battery icon with the smallest amount of charge in it. So the battery was just completely exhausted.
So you may not even need to reset it, just leave it for longer or even over night to get it's full charge back.
If the battery was fully discharged it may take 20-30 minutes or longer before it will show evidence of charging.
