Following your steps and after toggling on the iMessage I get a note saying "waiting for activation" followed by "use your Apple ID for iMessage"

    Hi,

I am a little confused as you say Adding the Apple ID  makes the iPhone number disappear but then you have  picture which does show both.

I am also lost as to why you are mentioning an UK Carrier  and a UK Telephone number.

Ok let me explain you. When i signed in the apple id (imessages) appeared the second picture. Amy mobile number was with grey colour. After the verification completed there wasnt the mobile number, just my apple id.

I read in an another topic that in order to activate the mobile number my carrier sends a sms at the +44.. Bla bla

That is a uk number if an apple server!!

    Hi,

I have two iPhones and have reset the iMessages several times and have never seen anything that suggests an SMS is sent anywhere.

I am not even sure that Apple have separate login points spread around the world.

Having said that they may operate a sort of Virtual Private Network  where you do access the local point to you, but the service works as a centralised server.

I had an issue once where the iPhone number was shown along with the Apple ID but the iPhone number was Unticked for some reason.

I removed the Apple ID and then set the iPhone to Airplane mode to break with the Server.

I then restarted the iPhone and then the Messages app and checked the iPhone number was now ticked.

Once I saw this was done I re-added the Apple ID.

My Mac then got the pop up alerts to say the iPhone was using the Number and the Apple ID.

The Number does not disappear on my iPhone.

Do you have another iOS device that showed the iPhone number that you have then tried to delete it from that iOS device ?

This normally gets a warning messages that the "Alias" concerned cannot be used with iMessages again.

I am wondering if you have effectively blocked this iPhone Number this way.

Thanks for you help, Ralph.  I finally took this in to the Genius Bar where they determined that my service provider does not fully support the iPhone.  Apparently this is a common problem in that situation.  Sorry to waste your time!

    No Problem.

    Hi Ralph,

I am having this same issue but on my ipad. It suddenly stopped using my phone. Umber and only my Apple ID for iMessage. Please tell me you know how to fix this!

    Hi,

It took me a long time to spot this new Post in the middle of the thread.

Does the iPad list both the Apple ID and the iPhone Number or has the iPhone Number disappeared ?

In Settings > Messages I would tick the iPhone Number listing if it is there.

If not remove the Apple ID then set the iPad to Airplane Mode for a few minutes.

After that re-add the Apple ID.

You should then get Pop up saying what the computer is using and what the iPhone is using.

Accepting the iPhone ones should add the iPhone Number.

Sorry about that but thank you for your reply!

The phone number is totally missing.  I removed the Apple ID, turned phone to airplane mode, waited a few minutes, turned airplane mode back on and re-added the Apple ID and it still is only showing the email address.

This happened suddenly after I restored my phone last week. Does my ipad need a restore?mim so frustrated and am willing to try anything at this point.

    Hi,

If the iPhone was Restored that repeat the Apple ID removal, Airplane Mode reset described above.

Hopefully the iPad should then get the pop ups to Accept which should add the iPhone Number.
