The sound/volume icon bar keeps appearing (and disappearing) on the iMac desktop screen and beeps. Wakes up the iMac if I put it to sleep.at worst it happens every few seconds. Please advise.

Thanks BDAqua. I think you have solved it as it's now about 6 hours now since I followed your suspicion by pressing the F11 and F12 volume buttons, which I usually do not use, several times each and the problem has not recurred since.
I do recall cleaning the keyboard, a few days before the problem appeared, with a small alcohol wipe which may have stuck one of these volume keys. Thanks again,

Sound like a sticky key or bad keyboard, do you have anther to test with?
