No longer recognizes when iPad/iPod are plugged in

Mac will no longer mount my iPad and iPod. Both components recognize that something is being plugged in, but nothing happens on the Mac end.

Have tried so far:

switching out cables

using different USB input

restarting and hard reboot

Any ideas?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Per your suggestion, I updated iTunes.

Now the iPad will sync, but hasn't changed anything for the iPod.
