how can I delete ilivid from my computer

I have a MacBook. Using OSX 10.7.5.
I downloaded ilivid and want to delete it. How can I do that?

Also, what is the best way to download youTube files on a Mac?

Thanks.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I consider iLivid malware - it takes over websites and automatically downloads unless you kill the browser window. It seems to like sites where you're expecting a download and exploits your expectation that you're getting the download you want rather than iLivid.

So to get rid of it take these steps in OS X --

You will see iLivid as a device. If you try to drag it to trash it will tell you it's in use. Go to the toolbar at the top of your desktop and you probably have an iLivid symbol. Click on it and choose exit.

You still can't drag the iLivid "device" icon to trash because it will still tell you it's in use by TLC (has an orange traffic cone symbol). You may see the little orange cone in your dock area, so you turn it off. The cone vanishes but you still can't trash iLivid.

Go to Finder, then go to your main Applications folder. READ THESE NEXT INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. YOU DO NOT, REPEAT NOT, TRASH YOUR ENTIRE APPLICATIONS FOLDER!

Inside the main Application folder you will *not* see either iLivid nor TLC icons. You *will* see a sub-folder called 'applications' with a weird symbol in front of the 'A' in applications. If you click on that SUB-folder it will simply mirror the contents of your main Application folder endlessly. That's where the malware is hiding.

Kill that "applications" sub-folder inside your main Applications folder. Just drag it to trash. My main Applications folder in Finder was not affected by this move. I still have all my real and wanted Applications.

Once you've trashed the fake application sub-folder you can drag the iLivid "device" icon to trash.

Then empty Trash. Then restart.

At that point I think the thing is dead. You may need to do more if you run Chrome but I don't so I can't help you with that.

Okay, please be patient, I'm sorry I bumped this but I need help.

The icon for this program on my Macbook is located on my desktop, Its not in my toolbar, it may have been at some point, at the top of my downloads but it has been long since buried (didn't notice it until I tried to free up some space and wouldn't let me delete).

If I right-click there is no "exit" available, only "open" and "eject" meaning it was never actually opened. I'm afraid of what happens if I click the "eject" option. It has never been officially opened, by me- so does that mean its just waiting to be installed? This is probably the dumbest question in the world but I'm pretty much tech illiterate so bare with me here.

I went into finder and looked for the sub folder, and couldn't find one in applications. The icon itself for applications under places, is two pencils spelling an 'A' is that the legitimate icon? or the one your talking about? I honestly can't remember (again, bare with me). I went through all the applications in it piece by piece but there is no sub folder of any kind. Also went into macintosh HD and looked through the applications folder (that looks like a folder) there and it is the same. If this is the decoy, where can I find my actual applications? how do I know what is what? because there is a pretty good chance I'm going to delete all my applications.

ilivid is shown as its own entity under 'devices' just below Macintosh HD. I right clicked that, but got the same options as my desktop button again. Next to its icon there is this ever present "eject" symbol, that never disappears like it wants you to try that. What would happen if I dragged that icon out of my devices and into the trash? would that solve the problem? (Am I right thinking that it was downloaded, but its contents were never officially installed? I still can't delete the thing)

I'm afraid to do so without asking, because if it hasn't officially been installed I don't want to mess with its dodgy icon so that I do accidentally install it.

You seem to really know what your talking about and I would really appreciate you taking your time out to break it down for a beginner level (so sorry) as to what I'm dealing with.

If you haven't opened the icon on your desktop, drag it to trash and then empty trash, but since you have an "eject" option it may be that it launched itself. In any case, start by dragging to trash then tell us what happened.

If the thing has opened it's hiding in your main applications folder and we'll take it from there, but tell us what happens when you drag it to trash. You might get lucky and it will delete.

Alright, tried dragging the icon from the desktop to the trash and as soon as I started to drag it down, the the trash bin turns into an 'eject' button itself, (standard line with an arrow facing upward). You see that stupid symbol pretty much everywhere this thing accompanies- like they really want you to press that.

I moved to my finder, and tried to drag the program from devices- that didn't turn my trash into an eject button this time, but once dropped, it goes right back to its spot below my HD drive. The trashbin didn't even animate when I hovered over it, like its immune to deletion.

It looks like its manipulating my trash more than anything else.... which is a problem. Since I want it gone.

Thanks for replying!

1. What OS are you running?

2. If you are running OS X version 10 and later, go to your main Applications folder and open it.

Do you see *another* folder also labelled "Applications" inside your main Applications folder? If you do see a subfolder also called "applications", that is NOT NORMAL.

You might click on that subfolder again -- if you do that, does anything change or is the display a mirror of exactly what you saw before you clicked on the subfolder? That IS NOT NORMAL.

3. My advice to you is that if you opened your main applicaitons folder and saw a subfolder labelled applications you should TRASH THE SUBFOLDER CALLED "APPLICATIONS".

DO NOT TRASH YOUR MAIN APPLICATIONS FOLDER. Trash the subfolder called "applications" ONLY.

If you are not willing to do that to the SUBFOLDER called "applications", then I can't help your problem and their plan to keep their program on your machine is going to work.

Finder>MacintoshHD>Library>Internet Plugins, delete the beast

What "beast" is that? What was the name of the file you removed?

Although I've never actually gotten my hands on a copy of this adware, due to it being primarily distributed through piracy sites and the accompanying unwillingness of people to share what they've been up to on those sites, iLivid seems to be related to the DownLite adware. However, I haven't heard of any internet plugins being used by DownLite, so I'd be interested to hear what you found. Here's a link to the instructions I've pieced together:

I unwillingly downloaded conduit and ilivid into my MacBook Pro 13" Retina OS Mavericks, this is my first time EVER to have a malware problem on any of my macs, i am desperate, sad and depressed. pop up ads keep showing up everything second on chrome, safari or mozilla and its driving me insane, i've managed to erase conduit, also installed AdBlock and it has helped but it has slowed down my web browsing and overall working speed.

PLEASE HELP!

Since iLivid is not a program but (external meaning internet)server based adware, you cannot remove it from your Mac. But: you can block it. I did this doing following steps with succes: iLivid is gone :-).

  1. Open the Terminal. To block specific websites, you will need to edit your "hosts" file. This file determines what can and cannot be accessed by the computer's network adapter. Adding websites to this file will prevent them from loading in any browser, including Safari
  2. Open the hosts file. Type sudo pico /etc/hosts and press Enter. You will be asked to enter in the Administrator password. The hosts file will open in the Terminal's text editing program.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the file. Use your arrow keys to navigate. Create a new line by pressing Enter.
  4. Type in the sites you want to block. For every site you want to block, enter 127.0.0.1 example.com and press Enter. Each entry should be on its own line. Keep the spacing between the IP-address 127.0.0.1 and the site name in line with the entries in the first part of the host file. Block the following sites:

ams1.ib.adnxs.com

ads.clicksor.com

tlvmedia.adk2.net

  1. Save and exit the editor. Once you have entered all of the sites that you want to block, save and exit by pressing Ctrl + O and then press Enter.
  2. Flush your DNS. In order for the settings to take effect, you will need to flush your cash. Fire up your Terminal again and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and pressing Enter.
  3. Close Terminal.

Presto, iLivid is gone :-).

Actually, iLivid ads are caused by the VSearch aka DownLite adware, which I have already given removal instructions for.

Note that editing the hosts file is an extremely poor solution, covering up a symptom while leaving the software causing it installed and active.
