Hi Eric, I appreciate your response. I think I have everything set up and I know I have a good internet connection. In the preferences i can see the mic input indicating as it goes up and down in pink.
However when I double key and try to speak text into an email, or pages the mic show no indication of receiving input (I don't know if it supposed to...) then when I double key it goes to scrolling (the pink dots light up in order over and over again) and the text never appears.
When I speak into an app, like pages, should I see an indication that the mic is working?

Try turning Dictation off and then turn it back on. A reset basically. Also trying restarting.
Long shot. Try changing the setting in System Preferences/Dictation & Speech/Dictation from Automatic to Internal Microphone using the dropdown menu.
I tried it in Mail and I did see the pink part moving, but it doesn't type anything in Mail. I don't have Pages, so I can't check that application.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
Well I finally restarted the computer and now it works fine, on internal mic, external mic, in mail, everywhere... Thanks for all your help.
