One thing you can do is to buy an enclosure, put your hard disk into it and connect the enclosure to your MacBook Pro by USB, so you will get access to the hard disk and you will be able to recover the data you want. Just open Finder and select the hard disk in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
You can find enclosures for the hard drive in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/
