My 17" MBP unit. seems to be affected by the above problem / defect.

Its not normail or practical.

Does anyone have a perfect 17" MBP unit, where everything is in order ?

Very interested to hear comments.

I think this is the way the 17" Laptops from Apple
are built in general. All 17" laptops i've come
across have a display hinge thats rather loose

when
compared to the 15" and others.

Possible explanation could the due to the

dimensions
of the laptop...i could be wrong

Moral: get the 15" 😝

He He He He He - I had four 15" MacBook Pro's prior to the 17" mate.

Been there.... Burnt that - ;=)

So basically are we saying that this is normal for a 17", because I am not happy with it, a screen is supposed to stay up........no ?

Thanks

The Apple rep has no idea what they are talking about. The 17" MBP and older PowerBook uses a counter-weighted hinge to handle the weight of the 17" display instead of a normal friction type hinge. Because of this it work well on a desk (low effort) but doesn't work as well in your laptop. Go to any store and compare the 15" model to the 17" (MBP or PowerBook). The hinges look the same on the outside but are completely different types.

My MBP was doing the same thing. Apple care said this
is NOT normal and sent me a box to send it back. The
rep said I should be able to hold the MBP vertical
without the screen closing.

Hello Brian, he is in the states and the apple tech said this is not normal and are sending him a box to sort out the problem.

he is in the United States - Why does the apple rep not not what he is talking about, i mean he works for apple, do you have apple tech service experience to dispute that this is a problem on these units where you cannnot use them at any angle other than horizontal..... (ill illustrate this a bit further down, my man)

ok im in the United Kingdom (Going to be on my 7th MBP User uploaded file) and my 2nd MBP 17", as was my first MBP 17" is afflicted by this floppy display lid syndrome, to the extent where I cannot use a laptop stand to promote a healthy and proper viewing angle on my unit on a desk and to help the MBP breathe better through better air circulation partucularly on the underside of the machine.

I cannot lift the unit up without the screen trying to fall on my hands - This is NOT practically normal, by any standard.

I called Applecare today, explained the situation and they agreed this is NOT normal for the machines to have loose hinges, MAKING THE SCREEN FLOP OVER and said it was a defect in the machine.

So these two apple service tech reps, from 2 different bits of the world, dont know what they are talking about, eh ? - lol

I have to say that I was very disturbed to find so many people with this same issue. I just bought one of the these and I have the hinge issue as well. For those that said that Apple representatives have told them that this is not normal, was it ever fixed?

I am extremely annoyed that I am going to have to return this machine to Apple for repair one day after I received it. Has anyone tried to go into an Apple store and have it repaired at the Genius Bar?

I understand what he was saying and what the Apple support person said. The support person was wrong. I've had four different PowerBook G4 17" models and played with the MBP 17" in the store. It's just how the hinge is made. It's made assuming someone will be primarily using it on a desk.

I don't know what you mean by "pick it up". If you mean pick it up and tilt it more than 30 degrees, then yes it will close on you. If you are near any stores that have any of the Apple 17" models try it on them and you will see it's the same.

It's not a flaw, it's just how it's designed. I'm not very found of it either, but that's how it works. I've seen lots of phone support make errors before. Many of them are not very technical users. They just read supplied info on their screen with little personal experience.

I am posting this for others that may be having this issue.

I called Apple tech support and was instructed to take it into one of the stores locally with a genius bar. When I got to the store, the genius told me that this was how the notebook was designed, and there was nothing they could do except send it in for repair. Just for kicks, I tested every 17" they had on display, and most of them had the hinge issue. I called Apple tech support back, from the store, and a very rude tech told me there was nothing she could do about it. I was ready to box it up and return it for a refund.

I have a couple of friends who are engineers at Apple and they assured me this is not normal and I need to send it in for a hinge replacement. I called up tech support once again and got someone really nice on the phone. He also affirmed that this was not how it was designed and set it up for me to send it in for repair.

I will find out very shortly when it is returned to me if it has been corrected and will update here to let others know. I find this to be an unacceptable condition on a laptop that cost me $3,500 out the door with the warranty. I think you should, too.
