Can I restore my iPhone 4 and update it without a computer

YES, By Restoring your iphone without itunes is by going to ''settings'' then General after that scroll down where it say ''Reset''then go to where it say ''Erase All Content and Settings'' after that it will it will ask for your password ''if you have one'' after that it will reboot. The other thing is how to update your ios is go to settings then general after that go to ''Software Update'' after that it will check for Updates.

Apple guide: That is NOT a restore, that is simply ERASING the phone. If the OP follows your advice on the iPhone they have had for 2 years and never updated, they will be left with a phone with nothing on it that will have to be plugged into a computer to activate it.

KIldedTIM is right i just check on my iphone and it does erase the iphone not restoring you ios device.

You can not restore your iPhone without a computer. but.....update, yes as already explained in the thread

Settings >> General >> Software Update. If you see the update window showing newest version being offered and download payload.

Hit Download and Install.

The OP will not have the option to update from within Settings, because the phone hasn't been upgraded in 2 years, and thus will not be on iOS 5

No, there will be NO option to see the words "Software Update", as it did not exist prior to iOS 5.
