I've been trying to empty my trash after downloading updates for Mountain Lion and my iPad & iPhone. I also have backed-up my MacBook using TIme Machine to an external hard drive. However, I cannot get all of the trash to empty...

The downloads have been recycled fine. However, my external hard drive (Freecom HDD) put old backups (from 2012) into my trash, causing a problem. When I click to empty the trash, I'm getting a finder window with a measure bar that first counts up to 4 or 5 thousand and then continues backward to nearly -22 thousand. It eventually stops, but will never actually dispose of the files.

I've tried rebooting, a secure empty of trash, using the option key - all with no success. If I attempt to move the backup files out of my trash, the MacBook simply begins making a copy of everything.

So I'm frustrated and looking for advice. Can anyone help me dispose of these files? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
