Major problem: Mac shut down during startup

When I start my Mac air, I get the welcome screen with the spinning thing below the Apple logo. At the bottom of the screen there is a status bar. Once the bar is at about 33% the computer shuts down.

This is pretty major as we are on a trip in Central America for another 10 days and my girlfriend needs her computer for work.

Any ideas please?
