Thanks for that. I installed Time Machine Buddy and followed the procedure to EXCLUDE the application DVD Studio Pro as that was the source of the file the device was having problems with. I never use DVD Studio Pro.
However, the device has failed to back-up twice since, giving the same file as the reason for being unable to do so. Any ideas?

I have tried this procedure twice after Time Machine failed to back up beyond about 11 GB, but the problem persists. I am using A WD My Book external drive which claims to be compatible with Time Machine. Any Ideas?
