I can't sync my restored iPod touch

My 3rd gen iPod touch won't sync. I restored it in order to update it to iOS 5 and everytime I connect it to the computer it isn't showing up on iTunes. My computer isn't installing it because it says I either need the CD (which I don't have) or better software to install it. Anyone know how to solve this?

iPod touch, iOS 4.2

I would start with

Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

or

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Yeah, I uninstalled iTunes and then reinstalled it and my iPod isn't being recognized by my computer or iTunes.
