will my mac play .avi file formats?

Hi

I have a new mac and not sure on opening this format. The help section lists AVI and the file format is .avi bit it wont open.

Any ideas?

If you can't use an AVI file with QuickTime, you may need to install an extension to make it work with this AVI file > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3526 Also, another option you have is to install a different video player as VLC

In addition to the VLC player that mende1 mentions, you can use a tool like Handbrake to transcode such formats to an MP4 that will play in quicktime. These can be found here:
