Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store (I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them who are reuiring the one-time only download). If you don't have a copy of them anywhere (you don't have them on a backup ?), and they are still in the store, then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

This is the reason I switched to just using audible.com

My story goes like this. I download a Jim Butcher book that was missing the last chapter. Being that it was at the end the book I did not know it was missing. Next year comes around next book in the series comes out and as I'm listening to it something seems off, like I missed something. I did a little digging on the Internet and find out the book when out missing the end. I contacted apple to say hey I'm missing part of my book. After a couple weeks of emails back and forth the answer I got was, I waited to long to report this issue. I said how could I know it was a issue until the next book in the series has came out. At this point I'm buying two to three books a month at $20 a pop, for three years. Now I only use audible.com because if I lose a download or there is a problem I can just re-download the book. I might be willing to come back to apple if they offered the same service for audio books as everything else they sell.

It's up to audible.com to allow iTunes customers to re-download them - they supply the audiobooks to Apple, so I assume that it's them that are insisting on a one-time only download.

So, you are telling me that audible.com has more pull to tell Apple what they can do. Then all of the Movie Studios, Recording Labels, Publishing Houses, Televison Networks that allow it. Maybe Apple should pony up and say you will let us do this or else we have enough cash to buy audible.com.

Not all film studios allow re-downloading of their films, and you can't re-download music, films and tv shows in all countries - and even where you can there is no guarantee that they will remain in the store for future re-downloading. It's not difficult to keep and maintain a backup of your downloads

This is all good and well but there should be a warning when buying Audiobooks from iTunes!

even backups aren't a magical cure-all. i made backups of all my iTunes files (mostly audiobooks) before reformatting my drive (bad boot blocks). Now i find i'm missing at least half of each part of each book. Including most of the Jim Butcher books, sadly . . . so i performed due diligence, and i'm still SOL. got a problem here . . . can't afford to buy them again (can't afford to buy any more, for that matter).

Backing up to the icloud should be just that. a full backup.

I should not need a computer to do part or some of my backups. If I forget or don't have the space to do the backup, thats on me. but I do and I did.

Apple please FIX this issue with Audiobook backups.

If they backup I will not need to redownload them from iTunes.

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to Apple nor iTunes Support. As far as I know what I said about audiobooks and audible.com in a previous post on this thread still applies - and other items will only be redownloadable whilst they remain in your country's store.
