i am wondering how to select a song i purchased to be my ringtone on iphone

You can't. You have to create one.

Ringtones and songs are two different types of files (information). You cannot use a song as a ringtone directly. You must convert it (or purchase a ringtone from iTunes Store).

If you have a Mac, you can convert a song to a ringtone using GarageBand. If you have a PC, there are conversions available, but I don't personally know about them.
