10.5 is Leopard. If you want to upgrade, you will have to purchase a Snow leopard disk (10.6) from the Apple online store:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

This is a requisite for Mt. Lion. If your MBP meets these requirements then you may purchase Mt. Lion from the App Store:

Ciao.

You are running Leopard!

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575

The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

and in the UK:

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

but nobody knows for how long it will be available.

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479

To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759

You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

Hey John,

2 steps indeed. they are 2 separate upgrades.

In order to upgrade your machine, you might like to do some preparation first.

In this lifehacker article is a detailed explanation how to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard (Step 1)

After upgrading to SL, update the new system with 'Software Update'.

I recommend you disable the scheduled check temporarily and check manually until all software is updated.

Then check out your upgraded and updated (10.6.8) system.

Use it and see what has changed/improved for a couple of days/weeks before proceeding with..

Step 2: The upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Get it from the App Store and follow instructions.

hello klaus1 - you were very helpful with my previous question - so i have another for you -

I have just installed MtLion and now i am unable to open my Adobe CS because the new OS MtLion days that those applications are "no longer supported - because they are PowerPC applications". I also have the same message for my MicroSoft Word/Excell/Powerpoint programs. I tried to re-install the programs, but even when trying to launch the CD - it gives me the same message ! This is very fustrating ! ! ! And i need this for my work !

Can someone please tell me the safe way to revert back to SnowLeopard.

Or is there a way around this (other than re-purchasing the Adobe CS/MicroSoft apps.

Thx

i could use your advice again... unless you are out to lunch ! LOL !

hi klaus- thanks for the info - but i am no mac wizard - and through no fault of no one else and my own stupidity - i have LOST EVERYTHING (repeat 20times) on my mac. 😢 😢 😢 I tried to back up some things - but still lost a MASSIVE part of my life. I cried alot last night.

Anyway ... i am in the process of rebulding my mac - so here is my question now -

how can i recouperate the music that is on my ipod and transfer to my newly reformatted mac?

and before i do something else that is stupid - do you know if OS Maverick will be able to support the Adobe CS and Microsoft apps?

thx again
