Hello. I have a Mas OSX ver 10.5.8. Which version is this (leopard, snow leopard, zebra lol, etc.... ?) - Can I or am i eligible to upgrade to the new OSX 10.8 (which i assume is Mountain lion)? I do have a 3,06 Ghz intel Core 2 duo. Thanks. john

10.5 is Leopard. If you want to upgrade, you will have to purchase a Snow leopard disk (10.6) from the Apple online store:

This is a requisite for Mt. Lion. If your MBP meets these requirements then you may purchase Mt. Lion from the App Store:

You are running Leopard!

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:

but nobody knows for how long it will be available.

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:

To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:

You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

The Snow Leopard is NOT a free update. It costs $19,99. Please look at the link.

If you want to install MT. Lion you need to have installed Snow Leopard and updated it to 10.6.8. It is a requirement for Mt. Lion.

2 steps indeed. they are 2 separate upgrades.

In order to upgrade your machine, you might like to do some preparation first.

In this lifehacker article is a detailed explanation how to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard (Step 1)

After upgrading to SL, update the new system with 'Software Update'.

I recommend you disable the scheduled check temporarily and check manually until all software is updated.

Then check out your upgraded and updated (10.6.8) system.

Use it and see what has changed/improved for a couple of days/weeks before proceeding with..

Step 2: The upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Get it from the App Store and follow instructions.

You will have to upgrade the applications. Whilst they could run in Snow Leopard under Rosetta, that is not possible in later versions of OS X.

Nope. Mavericks has yet to be released, and it is up to Adobe and Microsoft to make their applications Mavericks compliant.
