How to analyse a MAC Crash Report?, How to analyse a MAC Crash Report?

Hi,

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.8.2 and encountered this crash when inserting the thunderbolt display to my MacBook Pro.

Any help in analysing the cause of the problem is much appreciated.

Well, a few observations. First, if it's reliably reproducible every time you connect that display, and only then, there may be a hardware issue. Try uninstalling the stuff I will mention below. If that doesn't help, you'll want to talk to Apple about it.

Regarding the kernel panic log you have posted, the first thing to look at is what third-party kernel extensions (kexts) are installed. You have:

loaded kexts:

com.vmware.kext.vmioplug.10.1.24 10.1.24

com.vmware.kext.vmx86 0090.04.91

com.vmware.kext.vmnet 0090.04.91

com.vmware.kext.vsockets 90.4.22

com.vmware.kext.vmci 90.4.18

com.McAfee.kext.AppProtection 1.1.0d1

com.mcafee.kext.Virex 1.1.0d1

It's possible that the VMWare kexts might be somehow interfering with the hardware somehow and causing a problem when connecting a display. That's a guess, based on absolutely no personal experience with VMWare. Test by uninstalling VMWare, using whatever official installer is provided by the software, and see if the problem goes away.

Also, though there's no real evidence in the log that McAfee might be causing the problem, that software is junk. See how it performed when I recently tested 20 different Mac anti-virus programs:

http://www.thesafemac.com/mac-anti-virus-testing-01-2013/

Unfortunately, McAfee is the most difficult to remove of all Mac anti-virus software that I'm aware of. The uninstaller is hidden away in an invisible folder, and can only be run from the Terminal. Try copying the following command and then pasting it into the Terminal (search for it with Spotlight):

sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstallMSC

Press return after pasting. You should be asked for a password. Enter your login password, and be aware that this won't work unless you're logged in to an account with administrative privileges. (Most likely, your normal user account will have admin privileges, unless you have changed that.)

Just as an aside, this fault is happening in the Thunderbolt driver itself, though that doesn't mean VMWare isn't the root cause:

Yup, that was my thought. I'm not very familiar with VMWare, but I know that Parallels installs kexts for all kinds of hardware support. (Nice thing about the latest Parallels is, though, that they get loaded when Parallels loads and then unloaded when it quits.)
