How do i stop mail delivery system

How do I stop email delivery of an "undeliverable message"? I keep getting a message that Mail Delivery System will try again for up to 15 hours. My outgoing server is jammed and I don't know how to stop it from trying to deliver an undeliverable message. Thanks!

Mac OS X (10.7.5)

If the delivery message you're getting is from a remote mail server — and you're not the person running the mail server — then there's probably little that you can do until the message itself has timed out. This unless your mail provider has made available an interface to manage your messages on the server, and that's rare.

You can set up a rule and delete the undeliverable message.

If the message triggered because there's a local message within your mail client that's trying to reach your mail server, then those can be deleted from the outbound mailbox on your mail client.

If you're administering the mail server that's involved here, then you'll have to sort out why the mail server isn't sending. That can be due to any number of issues, and the mail server logs can usually provide some troubleshooting details. Details here depend on what sort of mail server is involved; whether Postfix on OS X Server, or some other mail server and/or some other operating system platform.

Hello,

We have the same problem here with 'Mail Delivery System'.

We using the Mac Mini with Server 2.2.1 on OS X 10.8.2.

We have several client accounts with IMAP mails, one of our client still getting those emails with 'Mail Delivery System' in the header. It's all very strange and it looks like spam. Because the mails contains information about ****, pills and other weird stuff.

And we can't get it stopt! Please does somebody know how to stop this??? It's filling up the mailbox, 1000 of emails every 10 min. and more coming... and coming... and coming....

Greetings, Levin den Boer.

levindenboer1975: Chances are good that you've got a completely different issue than the OP — the OP appears to be having an issue with one message that's stuck, and with a message that they've sent themselves — where your issue appears to be one involving what is probably reflected spam, or something similar.

If you're hit with one of those spam runs, you can end up with a very large number of messages. I've seen these that have the messages arriving as fast as the pipe and the server could deliver them; the botnets are bigger than the bandwidth of most any mail servers. (And there are too many mail servers around that still bounce stuff.)

Check the settings on your mail server around discarding the messages, whether via greylisting, via filtering for whatever is common in the messages or training SpamAssassin, by ensuring the sending DNS is correct, or just by dumping all the mail into the bucket until the barrage is over. There are documents on greylisting, SpamAssassin and dealing with spam on OS X Server here and here.
