What is the difference between the iTunes icon with the white background and the black note and the blue background with the white note?

I've just been sorting out the contents of my iTunes and notice that the majority of them have an iTunes icon with a white background and a black note. However, at the end of my contents, there is another batch of duplicates this time with a blue background and a white note. They won't play and I'm wondering:-

1 How did they get there?

2. Why won't they play?

3. If I delete them, will this have any impact on the existing contents showing the white background with a black note?

I've just found a program that will convert these files into something that can be played on iTunes and am in the process of doing it now. They look as if they're mostly duplicates of the existing iTunes files so I'll end up deleting them anyway but it's good to know that I've now got the choice of whether to bin or not.

Thanks for your help.
