Is a 6 year old macbook pro too old?

I am getting a MacBook Pro from a friend. It was his daughters for college, but she preferred a PC 😐. He's got it and never uses it, so he's willing to sell it to me dirt cheap also because he knows that I've been dying to buy one. The only hook is that its 6 years old.

I'm a musician, so it's VERY important that I can be able to run the latest version of Logic and Mainstage without it being too slow.

My question is, is six years too old to run the latest OS, or can it be upgraded? If not, coud I buy a new proccessor, and put it in it, or is is better that i just save up & buy the newest?
