where are my sent and trash folders?

I just got thru setting up my mail (macbook pro 15") for the first time. When all of my mail downloaded, I only saw "INBOX". There is no "SENT" or "TRASH" folders. Also, once mail has been read it disappears from the inbox. Any help would be appreciated.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Not sure if you've done this but you could try:

View > show favourites bar

View > show mailbox list
