I purchased Keynote v5.3 a few hours ago and it's been downloading since.
This download process has been going on for at least 3 hours now.
Does it take that long to download one program?
This download progress has been the same since I started downloading it.
Any tips/help would be appreciated!

The Keynote 5.3 download is 373 megabytes, which is not all that big. It's only about 1/3 the size of an iOS (iPhone, etc. operating system) download, and about 10% the size of a Mountain Lion download.
So it sounds like you have a less than optimal WiFi connection.
Perhaps you might consider cycling power on your WiFi router.
That may well cause you to lose whatever part of Keynote you have already downloaded, but it might be worth it.

just rebooted the router. it's a pretty slow connection compared to large cities 0.94 mbps DL speed. 😮
Still shouldn't take 4 hrs to download a 373 mb program??!

From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. What are those addresses?
192.168.0.1 and 205.171.3.25
The first address is your router, and the second is Qwest, which I assume is your ISP. The router has its own DNS settings, which are usually automatic. Have you changed them?

I have not changed anything. Just rebooted it earlier and it started back up as usual.
Yes Qwest (now Century Link) is my ISP.
Apple uses a far-flung network of servers to distribute content, including software updates. Sometimes you get connected to a slow one. You could restart the download, but that may not help, and you may have to start over from the beginning.
