How do I remove an icon from my desktop?

I just bought my Macbook Pro, and I've been getting it setup the way I want it. I installed Google Chrome and it left a white drive icon the desktop. I've tried putting it in the trash bin, but it says it cannot be deleted because Chrome is using it (even though there is no chrome window open). I've also tried dragging it into a folder in Finder (applications, documents, etc.) and it will copy it into the folder, but the icon is still there on the desktop. What should I do? Is there another way I can hide it or cut and paste it into a folder?

I just tried it and it worked. However, the minute I opened Chrome again, the icon popped back up on the desktop. I still want to use chrome, I just dont want the annoting little icon there.

There isn't anything that gives me the option to Quit. There is an option to eject it, but the same message keeps coming up (The disk "Google Chrome" couldn't be ejected because "Google Chrome" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject the disk again.) when I try to do that.
